What is IPTV? Technology, service and player explained

Understand what IPTV means, how the service and player differ, and what you need to watch television over the internet.

Published

IPTV describes television delivered over IP networks. In everyday use, three separate things are often blurred together: the service, the player and the device.

One technology, many interfaces

IPTV means television delivered using internet protocol. Unlike a single closed streaming app, it can appear through different players and on different devices, from a Smart TV to a box or computer.

That is why two people using the same service may see different menus. Navigation, the EPG, favourites and controls often belong to the chosen player.

Service, player and device do different jobs

The service supplies access. The player interprets that access and presents the interface. The device runs the app and connects to the network. Changing player may improve usability, but it cannot automatically fix a network or service issue.

  • Service: access, available organisation and commercial terms.
  • Player: interface, playback, EPG and favourites.
  • Device: compatibility, performance and internet connection.

What to check before you start

Identify the device operating system, check for a suitable app in the official store and understand how setup will work. If you already use a compatible player that works well, you do not need to replace it simply to use ASTERON.
